Leicester Lions

Post by tigerburnie »

As a relatively young club, this is quite a momentum occasion, hope more to follow.

Havant came back with scrum half Wesley Dugan nipping over for a try, converted by Knight to take Havant into a 19-3 lead.

Lions soon came back with a try by centre Matt Price, with Tomanek adding the extras to take the score to 19-10.

Havant finished off the half with tries by Vince and Knight, with Knight adding a conversion to take the half time score to 31-10.

Lions showed their tenacity coming back with tries by hooker Tim Waterfield and replacement Sam Janaway, with Tomanek adding both conversions to close the gap to 45-24.

In the closing stages of the game replacement George Pooley added an unconverted try for Havant taking the score to 50-24.

This was swiftly followed by an unconverted try by speeding Lions winger Roman Priestly-Nangle closing the game score at 50-29.

FT 50-29

This gave Havant a five point win and Lions a point for scoring four tries.

A well deserved win for Havant, but again Lions showed their application and persistence with a meritorious performance.

Lions welcomed Henley Hawks to Westleigh Park for a National Division 2 East game.
The game started off with fairly well balanced play with both sides having opportunities, but both defences held out well.

On 18 mins Hawks centre James Leach scythed though the Lions defence and slipped the ball to their supporting winger Seb Scott who went over for a try, converted by flyhalf Callam Jones to take a 7-0 lead.

Careless play by Hawks gave Lions a penalty which flyhalf Max Titchener slotted between the posts to reduce Hawks lead to 7-3.

As the first half was moving to its conclusion Hawks backrow Fin Basil charged through the Lions defence to score Hawks second try of the afternoon, with Jones again adding the conversion, to give a 14-3 halftime lead to Hawks.

HT 3-14

Again there was fairly well balanced play to start the second half.

As the game entered the final quarter Hawks had a purple patch with three tries in quick succession.

Hawks tries were by full back Tom Molhoek breaking through the centre, followed by replacement Will Benning driving along the wing and backrow Max Brown outpacing the Lions defence, with Jones adding two conversions to take the score to 33-3 in Hawks favour.

Lions came back at Hawks but were unable to break through a strong effective Hawks defence.

FT 3-33

A well deserved win for Henley Hawks. Lions produced some attacking play against Hawks, but did not make much of an impact on the Hawks defence.

So far this season Lions have played five games, with one win and four defeats.

Meanwhile in the other game at Westleigh Park and away the scores were:-
Leicester Lions 1999s/II 32 (4 tries) St Neots 17.(3 tries)

Away Game

Lions squad for the trip to Canterbury

The Lions have three teams playing today and a colts side, been a while since that has happened, it seems from the outside that head coach Tom Varndell is going back to basics with a Tigers style "build you own with a sprinkling of outside signings" rather then the previous reliance on dual registered Tigers and Saints, be interesting to see what happens.

Match report
This weekend Lions made the long journey down to Kent to play Canterbury.
Canterbury were quickly out of the blocks with two early tries.

After 7 mins Canterbury winger Garry Jones sped over for an unconverted try, which was soon followed by try by nippy scrum half Presley Farrance, with fly half Owain Collins adding the conversion to take Canterbury into a 12-0 lead.

In the latter part of the first half Lions quickly retaliated with tries by centre centre Ahren Crowley, winger Neil Machiels and winger Matt Price, with fly half Max Titchener adding two conversions to take Lions into a 19-12 lead.

On 35 mins for Canterbury Farrance went over for his second try, with Collins adding the conversion to draw the score at 19-19.

In one of the last plays of the first half Price went over for his second try, with Titchener slotting the conversion between the posts, to allow Lions to reach the break with a deserved 26-19 lead.

HT 19-26

Canterbury produced a come back in the first ten minutes of the second half with the second try for Jones, quickly followed by a try by centre Will Waddington, with Collins adding a conversion to snatch back the lead at 31-26.

As the game entered its final quarter Price completed his hat trick with an unconverted try for Lions, drawing the score at 31-31.

Lions conceded a penalty and with trusty kicking by Collins gave the lead back to Canterbury at 34-31.

Lions were unable to come back and add points to their tally and the game ran with a 34-31 victory to Canterbury.

FT 34-31

An exciting and well balanced game which either side could have won, with Canterbury taking a five point victory and Lions taking two points for having scored four tries and a close losing end game score.

Unfortunately Lions are still in a trailing position in the league.

Other Lions results this weekend were:-

Lions claimed a nail biting win over Colchester in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
Colchester were first out of the blocks with two tries in the first seven minutes. Second row Haydn Sykes outpaced the Lions defence with a run from the halfway line, quickly followed by hooker Finley McCartney driving through to score tries, both converted by centre Findlay Gilmour for Colchester to take a 14-0 lead.

Lions soon retaliated with tries by hooker Tim Waterfield and winger Taio Varndell, with Max Titchener adding a conversion to close the score to 14-12 to Colchester's advantage.

An offside and a high tackle by Colchester gave penalties to Lions which Titchener slotted between the posts for Lions to take the lead at 18-14.

This was quickly followed by winger Neil Machiels sprinting through the Colchester defence for an unconverted try, taking Lions into the break with a 23-14 lead

HT 23-14

Colchester's start of the second half was a mirror image of their start to the game when they scored quick forwards tries by prop Leroy O'Neil and No 8 Ed Read, with flyhalf Ben Mills adding the two conversions, to take Colchester back in the lead at 28-23.

Lions soon came back at Colchester with an unconverted try by replacement Dexter Ryde, closing the score to 28-28.

Winger Max Clark regained the lead for Colchester with a speeding run through the centre for an unconverted try to take the lead at 33-28

This was quickly followed by Lions taking back the lead with a try by centre Jake Sterland, converted by Titchener to make it 35-33 to Lions.

Colchester showed their determination with a powerful run by Waterfield, which was finished off by replacement Ethan Cole outpacing the Lions defence to score the unconverted try which took them back into a 38-35 lead.

With five minutes to go Lions full back Owen Carroll came into line and worked his way through the Colchester defence for the final try of the game, converted by Titchener, to move Lions into a winning 42-38 lead.

FT 42-38

An entertaining game between two sides committed to attacking rugby, giving Lions their second win of the season. An excellent example of two sides applying themselves to crowd pleasing rugby.

Lions move up the table to 11th position in a league comprising 14 teams.

Leicester Lions II had a tough trip to Corby with a score of Stewart & Lloyds 52 (8 tries) Leicester II 19 (3 tries).

Leicester Lions do not have a fixture next weekend, but Leicester Lions II are at home to Stockwood Park, with a 2.15 pm kick off.
